Welcome: Elena Corbett, Director of Education Abroad at AMIDEAST

AMIDEAST is proud to introduce our new Director of Education Abroad, Elena Corbett!

Elena comes to AMIDEAST from CIEE where she has served as the Center Director for CIEE’s Amman study abroad programs from the fall of 2012-spring 2017. Elena received a Ph.D. from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. She has taught a range of courses in Middle East History, Islamic Civilization, and Arabic. Before moving to Amman in 2012, Elena was a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History at Penn State University Erie and an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, where she was also the Academic Programs Coordinator for the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies. Elena has also designed and administered several study abroad opportunities for American students in Jordan, including the inaugural year of the Critical Language Scholarship program in 2006.

Elena brings to our organization her valuable experience as a faculty member in the U.S. higher education system as well as a strong background in education abroad. Elena’s academic training emphasized language acquisition and field experience, which led to more than 20 years living, studying, working, and traveling in (and beyond) the Arab world; making her well suited to contribute to AMIDEAST’s education abroad programming.

Please join us in welcoming Elena to AMIDEAST!
